KAYAK (KY) GRADINGS & ABBREVIATIONS
Distance indicates the approximate kayak length of the outing in kilometres.
S Short – under 15 km M Medium 15-20 kms L Long 20-25 kms XL Extra-long – over 25 kms
Terrain (T)
T1 Sheltered waters with minimal influence from wind, tide, or boat wash, e.g., Tallebudgera Creek, Saltwater Creek. All types of kayaks, canoes with no length restrictions, but with some built-in buoyancy.
T2 Semi-sheltered waters but with increased potential for wind, waves, tide, and boat wash, e.g., Nerang River, Coomera River, Broadwater. Minimum boat length 3.3m. Sit-on or sit-in. (Bulkheads and closed cockpit desirable but not compulsory.
T3 Semi-sheltered to open waters where the effects of weather changes can result in strong winds, heavy seas and unpredictable currents and tidal movement, e.g., Jumpinpin, Russell Island to Blaksley’s, Cleveland to Peel Island. Minimum boat length 4.3 m. Sit-on or sit-in. Kayaks only. Sit-in kayaks should have bulkheads, waterproof hatches, spray skirt, tow-rope, paddle float, good bailing system. Sail optional.
Fitness (F)
F1 Open to all paddlers, including beginners.
F2 Able to maintain pace at 4 kph in still water. Understanding of rescue techniques. Able to cope with boat wash (bracing), winds to 15kts, seas to 0.6m, and adverse tide movement or currents.
F3 Trained in basic rescue techniques, wet exits and re-entry, and towing / being towed. Confident in winds of 25kts. Seas to 1.0m, from the combined effects of wind and tide. Capable of maintaining a pace of 5kph for extended periods in smooth waters.
