PRESIDENT'S REPORT - APRIL 2025
24th April 2025
By Michelle Jackson
After a delayed celebration party because of bad weather, we were finally able to celebrate our club's 50th anniversary, and what a great day it was. We had 80 members attend, including our founder, Ron Quickenden, and his daughters, as well as special guests John Marshall from Bushwalking Queensland and Barry Davies from Lamington National History Association, who both gave interesting talks.
Some past long-term members were also attending, and we were able to present Ron with a booklet on the history of the club, compiled by Brenton, as well as a special plaque commemorating the 50 years that the Gold Coast Bushwalkers club has been operating. Also, a presentation to Bernie Malone, a foundation and life member, as well as Bill James, a life member who has also been in the club 50 years.
We were able to award Kay Done her life membership. Kay has been at the club for 42 years and has contributed a lot over the years. A delicious spread of salads, thanks to our members who came along and special thanks to John West who saved the day by supplying the BBQ and cooking with help from some members. Thanks to all our volunteers on the day who contributed so much to make the day such a success. We had a special cake that Ron cut and Jean Watson, a past member, wrote a beautiful poem. To top it off, a bit of fun with line dancing. Lots of photos were taken so we will compile a photo book, so all can enjoy the memories.
Plans are under way for our next big event, the hosting of the 2025 pilgrimage, to be held on 8th - 10th of August. We are calling out for volunteers who can help on the weekend and for all our great cooks. We will need lots of cakes, slices and cookies, and soup, as well as walks and social events for the weekend. We want to make this a weekend to remember.
Our general meeting is coming up in June, so if anyone is interested in joining our committee, and being part of our great group of members who work hard to make the decisions that benefit all our members, please contact Anna, our secretary. We will also have a leader's talk at that meeting for any members who would like to know what is required to lead walks.
A lot of tracks have been closed due to the cyclone, but the rangers are working hard to open them up and our program still has lots of choices.
Enjoy your activities.
