DWMT3F3 O’Reilly’s - Balancing Rock, Castle Crag and Beyond
This is not a difficult walk, about 13klm. It offers magnificent views and some interesting forest walking over poorly-defined trails. It’s a good start for those wanting to gently ease into off-track walking. The section over the Razor Back to Castle Crag would be rated T4 F4.
From the O’Reilly’s Guest House, we pass through the campsite and take the sealed track that parallels the O’Reilly’s road to where it joins the Morans Falls Track. This easy track zig-zags down to cross Morans Creek, just before the falls. At the head of the falls we take the steps heading towards the Red Road which then leads us to Balancing Rock. Look back for the view of Moran Falls.
From here is the optional there-and-back leg, across the razor-back out to Castle Crag – about half a kilometer – and the aerial views of the Kerry Valley. Anyone not keen on going out to Castle Crag can wait at Balancing Rock.
From Balancing Rock we head for Moonlight Crag which looks out to The Lost World. Then, following the NW-to-SE cliffs, a poorly defined and storm-damaged trail leads to Orchid Grotto and Lyrebird Lookout.
Leaving the cliffs, we head for Moran’s Creek Camp. This is a historic site where the workers and rangers who built and maintained the Lamington NP tracks lived from the mid-1930s to the late 1960s
After the Camp we head NW to join the Border Track and back to O’Reilly’s.
Bring morning tea, lunch and at least 2 ltr of water as well as the hiker’s necessities as set out in the Club’s Member Jungle. Good footwear, leg-protection and pest control are recommended.
Members new to off-track walking and visitors, please contact the walk leader before the event.
This is a joint walk with the Bushwalkers Adventure Club, hopefully the first of many, so there is a limit of 6 participants from each club.
