DW L T3F3 Mt Merino

This walk is for anyone who wants a long, easy walk, but good pace is required, as it is more than 21kms return.

The Mt. Merino track leaves the Border Track 10.01 km from Binna Burra. We turn left and continue up the hill past Antarctic beeches. The canopy of this temperate rainforest is much lower, mosses hang from the trees and there is much less diversity in the rainforest. From Beereenbano Lookout, you can look across to Mt Hobwee. To the left is the Dave's Creek heath country. From the summit lookout, there are views of Mt. Warning and the Border Ranges. Among the peaks are (R-L) Mt. Wanungara, Mt. Bithongabel, Mt. Cominan, and Throakban. In the Limpinwood Valley below you can also make out several subsidiary vents of the Tweed Volcano, marked by the volcanic plugs which now rise out of the valley. The top of Mt Merino is a significant haven for some of Lamington's special plants. Hopefully, some orchids may be out.

Before returning the same way back to Binna Burra, we will go another 100 metres to Chakoonaya Lookout on the Border Track, towards Green Mountains.

Please wear hiking boots, bring at least 2 litres water, electrolytes and leech repellent.
